I love what you did with the reflections. Way cool composition. Considering the file size of just one of those TopMod cubes it must have really given your rig a workout...even with 8 hyperthreaded cores maxed out. Phew! Worth it though. Turned out great!
Thanks Matrix. I owe it to you for the tutorial... great stuff. Learned a lot from what is a seemingly simple process. Love it when that happens. So to your points on the processing (and since I am a geek, my favorite subject)
The render took about 9 hours, NOT because of the cube, but the damn reflections on the floor material OUCH! It predicted 5 hours up front and then when it hit the floor, it got stuck, and the clock kept ticking.
The only cube with an optimized MeshSmooth is the front green one. If you know 3DS, it was set at level 4 of smoothing which is pretty high. That brought the RAM use to about 29GB and then the CPUs kicked in to high gear.. indeed it took a toll I am of course still not happy with the GI baking the top of the cubes, but if I reduced it, it would be too dark. I didn't want to spend time re-doing the lighting so off it went as is.
Thanks again for the shape and tutorial on how to make it.
Glad the tut helped! I really suck at writing tuts, lol. Not familiar at all with 3DS. Don't really understand the need for smoothing? Does 3DS use instancing? Like...can you make 50 copies of 1 object and only one is really ummm...real? Not even sure what I'm asking,LOL. Nevermind. Got a render going now...6hrs and 26% done. eeeeeshhh. Might be done in another 12hrs. It's the damn volumetric clouds. Sure hope it's worth it. We'll see.
I really like that reflection effect! Gonna try that next. Persevere.
That would be the PERFECT setup! Multiple monitors too! Hated to do it but pulled the plug on that render. After 19 hrs. it was at 32%. Hadn't even reached the heavy part of the render. Dialed back the quality just a hair and re-rendering. I think it's time to put spare parts together and start farming, lol.
It really should be easier to do a farm. Too many shared directories etc. These guys should move into the 22nd century and create a pipeline that is exposed via HTTPS and completely inclusive. This could also allow for folks to simply share spare CPU cycles over the Internet. No pre-requisites... just a space CPU cycle ... that way anyone can render anywhere as long as you have permission ... I have a ton of CPU cycles at work but the idea of installing and sharing etc. is daunting...
You really ought to consider doing more tuts. You are actually EXCELLENT since you are very detailed and step-by-step-like which is a must for me. I love to cook, but I love to follow recipes to the letter. Go figure. I am willing to go at it alone, but only after being hand-held for some time LOL.
3DS definitely has this feature and more. So above, all the cubes are fake, only the left front most one is the real one. The green one is a COPY the rest are just instances.
The actual layout is an array function where you do nothing more than push sliders around until you get the layout you like, the quantity, rotation scale etc. just the way you like it, with preview and then hit GO... it is very useful.
Okay, ya. Vue has something similar to instancing. I think Maxwell does too. Soon as I'm done re-rendering my Vue scenes Ima dive into Maxwell and Modo. Can't wait! Thanks for offering to help. 'preciate it! Persevere...
